Course: B1-3, The Old Testament: The Story Behind the Story Faculty: The Rev. Rick Elliott

Course Description: This course provides an overview of the flow of history and a sense of the development of major themes of the Old Testament, as well as a synopsis of individual books comprising the Old Testament. Students will have the opportunity to use commentaries, Bible study guides, and Bible versions as they discuss the historical complexity of the meaning of Holy and Inspired Word of God. Presbyterian Commissioned Lay Pastor students are also expected to meet the guidelines given by the PC(USA) as this is a constitutional course mandated by the Book of Order. Rev. Elliott will focus his version of this course by taking major portions of scripture and placed them in their historical context. I also would be working from an objective definition of the bible as a library that is literature, that's ancient, pre-scientific, Semitic, and Eastern; and is written out of a theological bias for theological purposes. One issue that will be dealt with is why were the Hebrews welcome guests to Egypt, then a threat that needed to be suppressed? –The Dynasty change from a Semitic one to an Egyptian one. The Land of Goshen where the Hebrews were given to live is at the front doorstep of the major way to get into Egypt.
