Weekday Ministries Conference - Aug. 3-5, 2010 at Memorial Drive Presbyterian. View flyer. Information. Registration.

Presbytery of New Covenant's Day of Service - Aug. 7, 2010
On the Day of Service, our 105 communities of faith in southeast Texas are moving out of their buildings to engage in a service project in their communities. Call it "service evangelism," a term used by our February keynote speaker, the Rev. Eric Hoey. The connectedness of our Presbyterian tradition encourages us to do this on the same day so that at least in spirit, it is a large community of faith working on a common theme.

Presbytery of New Covenant's Day of Celebration - Aug. 15, 2010
Rather than a centralized celebration, our churches are encouraged to celebrate in regional settings, Clusters, and share what God has done through our Day of Service, giving thanks to God for the opportunity to serve together. (Clusters are listed in Contacts.)

Reading the Bible in a 'Decent and Orderly Way' - Aug. 27-28, 2010
The Bible holds a place of honor for many people of faith. But when it comes to doing something more than that with the Bible, we seem to have a hard time. Some approach the Bible as a sacred document that “fell” from heaven with absolute authority in every “jot and tittle.” Others view the Bible as a collection of legends and fables that only tell us about the ancient world. Neither would seem to be a very “balanced” approach to Holy Scripture.

If you’ve wanted to learn how to approach the Bible “decently and in order”—as we Presbyterians like to do in all things—you have a chance to do that. On Friday evening, Aug. 27 (7:00-9:00 p.m.) and Saturday, August 28 (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) at the Presbytery Center, Rev. Dr. Alan Brehm will lead us in an overview of a Reformed approach to Scripture—including its importance and how to interpret it responsibly.

Alan is a former New Testament professor and has taught Biblical Hermeneutics. He has taught adjunctively for Austin Presbyterian Seminary and Houston Graduate School of Theology. He approaches the Bible from the perspective of personal spirituality and practical faith. Contact mailto: mmarcotte@pbyofnewcovenant.org for full details.

Presbyterian Night at the Astros! - Sept. 11, 2010
Presbyterians in New Covenant will gather for Presbyterian Night with the Astros at 6:00 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 11, for the game with the LA Dodgers.

Focus 2010: Light for a Weary World - Oct. 2, 2010
Reading today’s headlines is enough to make you tired. Everywhere we look we seem to be bombarded with images of a threatened eco-system in the Gulf of Mexico, financial uncertainty, families under stress, and growing partisanship in all walks of life. Tired? Why it’s enough to leave us exhausted!

Yet as Christians we understand that the abundant life is about more than acquisitions, team championships, or bank accounts. FOCUS, New Covenant’s primary discipleship event, will seek to celebrate hope and inspire faithful engagement of the world in its workshops and worship offerings on Saturday, October 2, at First PC, Pasadena.

Dr. Mel Bringle, professor of philosophy and religious studies at Brevard College and noted hymn text writer, will frame the day with a morning keynote and closing worship.      Twenty five workshops will inform, inspire, and engage participants on a variety of topics relating to social justice, healthy living, and nurturing our children and youth. Walk away with information you can use in your personal life or in your churches. Among the exceptional faculty are:

  • Rev. Jon Brown, Director of Mission Interpretation at the General Assembly Mission Council, will share the good news about what Presbyterian mission workers are doing in the world and across the globe.
  • Glenn Bannerman, noted expert on recreational ministry, will lead an experiential workshop for parents (or grandparents) and elementary-aged children on creative play.
  • Ken Odom and Eric Pugh, founders of the Millennial Leaders Project, will spark you interest with ideas drawn from their work developing the leadership gifts of youth in mission.
  • Rev. Shawn Kang, Pathways NCD, Houston will help us to use social networking technology for more than sharing pictures and games.
  • Beth Gunn, Associate for Youth in North Carolina Presbytery - new and creative Bible teaching techniques
  • Rev. Paul Thompson, co-author of God’s Gift of Sexuality curriculum and pastor in Grace Presbytery - how and when to talk with youth about dating, mating, relating and creating and Healthy Practices for Families
